Controlled Component Supply
Electronic Component Sourcing
Turn a released BOM into a controlled supply plan for ICs, connectors, memory, and other production components. We resolve exact part identity, source path, approved alternatives, moisture handling, traceability, and lifecycle risk before material reaches PCBA production.
The Procurement Problem
A BOM Line Is Not Yet a Safe Purchase
A distributor listing can resemble the requested part number and still be wrong for the board. Package suffix, temperature grade, memory organization, connector keying, firmware dependency, moisture sensitivity, lifecycle status, and source history can all determine whether the material is usable.
Component sourcing therefore starts from the exact manufacturer part number and released board revision. Price, MOQ, lead time, and stock are evaluated only after part identity, approved source path, and substitution rules are clear.
Before RFQ
Normalize the BOM Before Comparing Price and Stock
| BOM Field | What to Lock | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer Part Number | Full MPN including package, grade, reel, or ordering suffix where applicable. | Prevents a near-match from becoming an uncontrolled substitution. |
| Reference & Quantity | Designators, quantity per board, DNP status, and planned build quantity. | Separates actual purchasing demand from optional or unpopulated positions. |
| Source Rule | OCM, authorized distribution, approved independent source, or customer-supplied material. | Defines acceptable pedigree and counterfeit-risk controls. |
| Alternates | Pre-approved MPNs or explicit no-substitute status for critical lines. | Keeps procurement decisions inside the released engineering configuration. |
| Lifecycle Status | Active, NRND, last-time-buy, discontinued, or another manufacturer-defined status. | Exposes continuity risk before shortage stops the production build. |
Component Identity
ICs, Connectors, and Memory Need Different Checks
- ICs & Controllers
- Confirm full MPN, package, voltage, temperature grade, MSL, lifecycle status, and any firmware or driver dependency.
- Connectors
- Confirm series, mating part, pitch, row count, keying, orientation, latch, current rating, plating option, and mechanical drawing.
- Memory
- Confirm DDR generation, capacity, speed, rank, ECC/non-ECC, voltage, SPD behavior, form factor, and platform compatibility.
- Passives & Power Parts
- Confirm package, tolerance, voltage or current rating, dielectric or material system, temperature behavior, and approved manufacturer series.
Supply-Chain Risk
Prefer Known Pedigree Before Adding More Inspection
For active production parts, the lowest-risk sourcing path is normally the original component manufacturer or an authorized distributor with traceability back to the manufacturer. Shortages and obsolete components can force procurement into independent channels, where source qualification and verification become more important.
| Source Path | Primary Evidence | Procurement Response |
|---|---|---|
| OCM / Authorized | Manufacturer or authorized-distributor traceability and commercial records. | Preferred path for active components when supply and schedule allow. |
| Approved Independent | Supplier qualification, lot information, packaging, markings, documentation, and risk-based verification. | Use under a sourcing and quality plan appropriate to the component and application. |
| Unknown Pedigree | Incomplete or broken chain of custody. | Escalate before purchase; higher-risk programs may require specialized counterfeit-detection testing. |
Material Condition Before Reflow
Moisture-Sensitive Parts Carry a Floor-Life Limit
IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033D defines handling for moisture/reflow-sensitive devices classified under J-STD-020. At factory conditions no higher than 30 °C / 60% RH, published floor life is 168 hours for MSL 3, 72 hours for MSL 4, 48 hours for MSL 5, and 24 hours for MSL 5a.
BOM Review
Have a BOM With Shortage or EOL Lines?
Send the released BOM, required quantities, board revision, build schedule, approved brands, no-substitute lines, lifecycle concerns, and whether independent sourcing is permitted.
When the Exact MPN Is Unavailable
An Alternate Component Is an Engineering Change
A cross-reference or parametric match is only a candidate. Before an alternate enters the approved BOM, compare the characteristics that can change board behavior, software compatibility, or manufacturing.
- Mechanical Match Package, footprint, pinout, height, orientation, and mating interface.
- Electrical Match Ratings, thresholds, timing, power, signal behavior, tolerance, and temperature grade.
- Platform Match Firmware, driver, SPD, initialization, qualification, or configuration dependencies.
- Manufacturing Match MSL, reflow limits, package handling, inspection requirements, and process compatibility.
- Engineering Approval Record the approved alternate against the correct BOM and board revision before use.
Long-Lifecycle Electronics
Manage PCN, EOL, and Last-Time-Buy Before Supply Disappears
Industrial Mini-ITX products can remain in service longer than individual semiconductor, memory, or connector families. Lifecycle sourcing monitors manufacturer notices and treats obsolescence as a planned engineering and purchasing decision rather than an emergency broker search.
PCN
Review manufacturer changes to process, material, site, package, or specification for impact on the released product.
Last-Time-Buy
Compare remaining production demand, service demand, storage risk, cash exposure, and alternate availability before committing to a bridge purchase.
EOL / Obsolete
Choose between remaining authorized stock, verified independent supply, an approved alternate, or redesign according to risk and remaining product life.

Receiving Identity
Know Which Component Lot Entered Production
Traceability connects delivered material to the approved purchase decision and receiving disposition. Required depth depends on the source risk, product quality plan, and customer requirements.
- Part Identity
- Manufacturer, complete MPN, quantity, packaging form, and applicable lot or date-code information.
- Source Record
- Supplier identity, purchase record, chain-of-custody documentation, and authorization status where applicable.
- Condition Record
- Packaging integrity, moisture-control status, receiving observations, labels, and required inspection evidence.
- Disposition
- Accepted, quarantined, returned, tested, or engineering-approved deviation tied to the applicable lot.
Supply-Chain Reference Basis
Use the Standard That Matches the Supply Risk
- IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020F
- Classification standard for moisture/reflow sensitivity of non-hermetic surface-mount devices.
- IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033D
- Handling, packing, shipping, storage, floor-life, and use controls for moisture-sensitive devices.
- IEC 62402:2019
- Requirements and guidance for managing obsolescence throughout an item’s life cycle.
- SAE AS6081A
- Counterfeit-avoidance requirements for independent distribution, including reliable-source identification and control of suspect or counterfeit EEE parts.
- SAE AS6171A
- Risk-based inspection and test requirements used when EEE parts lack reliable pedigree or counterfeit risk requires additional verification.
- Manufacturer Documentation
- Datasheets, errata, PCNs, discontinuance notices, qualification data, and ordering information remain the part-specific technical authority.

Material Release
Release the Approved BOM Into PCBA Production
Sourcing ends when the purchased component configuration, source disposition, approved alternates, and required material records are tied to the released BOM. PCBA manufacturing then consumes that controlled material set.
FAQ
Electronic Component Sourcing Questions
Can you source a complete BOM?
Yes. We can review released MPNs, quantities, approved brands, alternates, lifecycle status, source constraints, and build timing before releasing material for PCBA.
Can you source obsolete components?
Yes, subject to availability and risk review. Options include authorized stock, qualified independent sources, last-time-buy inventory, or engineering-approved replacements.
How do you avoid counterfeit parts?
Prefer OCM or authorized sources, preserve traceability, qualify independent suppliers, inspect incoming lots, and apply risk-based counterfeit testing when pedigree is inadequate.
Can you source alternative components?
Yes, but engineering must approve them. Package, pinout, electrical behavior, software dependencies, MSL, lifecycle, and manufacturing compatibility require review before substitution.
Authorized vs independent distributors?
Authorized distributors normally provide stronger manufacturer pedigree. Independent sources can solve shortages or EOL demand but require tighter qualification, traceability, inspection, and risk control.
