Multiple Serial Port Mini-ITX Platforms

Industrial Mini-ITX Motherboard with 6 COM Ports and RS-485

A compact industrial platform for connecting PLCs, meters, sensors, HMIs, service terminals, and legacy serial equipment without relying on external USB adapters.

  • 6 COM ChannelsDedicated multi-device connectivity
  • RS-485 SupportChannel allocation confirmed by board release
  • Mini-ITX Footprint170 × 170 mm system integration
  • Controlled I/O BuildPinout, protection, BIOS and cables locked

Confirm the electrical standard, connector, pinout, isolation, termination, cable length, baud rate, and COM-port numbering for every channel.

Serial Configuration

6-COM Mini-ITX Specifications and Channel Planning

Six physical COM channels are the starting point. Electrical mode, connector, protection, termination, and software enumeration must be confirmed for the released board.

01
Map every connected device

List the PLC, meter, sensor, HMI, modem, scanner, or legacy controller assigned to each COM port.

02
Define the RS-485 electrical plan

Confirm two-wire or four-wire operation, termination, bias, isolation, cable length, grounding, shielding, and baud rate.

03
Freeze the production I/O build

Lock the board revision, pinout, cable assembly, BIOS, driver package, COM numbering, and approved substitutions.

Serial Integration

Six Serial Channels for PLCs, Meters, Sensors, and Legacy Equipment

Assign each port by device and electrical standard instead of treating all six connectors as interchangeable.

COM1–2PLC, HMI, or service interfaces
COM3–4Meter chains, scanners, or machine controllers
COM5–6Sensor buses, legacy devices, or reserved expansion
  • Keep the port-to-device map consistent across BIOS, operating system, labels, and wiring drawings.
  • Use termination only at the correct bus endpoints and keep multidrop stubs short.
  • Define shield, common reference, and isolation strategy for electrically noisy installations.
  • Validate concurrent traffic, recovery after cable faults, and watchdog behavior on all active channels.

Deployment Fit

Industrial Systems That Benefit from Six Native COM Ports

The board is strongest where several serial devices must stay directly connected, consistently enumerated, and serviceable inside one compact controller.

Choose a different architecture when

the system requires synchronized motion control, certified safety buses, deterministic high-speed fieldbus timing, or more isolated networks than the selected board can provide.

Project Configuration

Serial Port Mapping, Protection, and Production Control

Customize only the items that change how the six channels connect, survive field conditions, and remain stable across production batches.

Discuss 6-COM Board Customization
Per-Port Electrical Mode

Define RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 requirements and any software or jumper selection method.

Connector and Pinout

Select rear DB9, internal IDC, locking connectors, breakout cables, panel labels, and service access.

Isolation and Bus Components

Specify isolation, ESD, surge protection, termination, bias, common reference, and shield treatment.

BIOS and OS Enumeration

Lock COM numbering, driver versions, watchdog behavior, startup state, and the validated operating-system image.

Configuration Questions

6-COM and RS-485 Selection FAQ

Confirm the channel details that determine whether the released board matches the real serial network.

Are all six COM ports automatically configured as RS-485?

No. The product supports six COM channels and RS-485, but the exact RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 allocation must be confirmed for the selected board and release.

Can RS-485 termination and bias be enabled on the motherboard?

It depends on the released configuration. Confirm whether termination and bias are onboard, jumper-selectable, software-controlled, or provided externally in the field wiring.

Can isolated and non-isolated serial channels be mixed on one board?

Only when the selected design supports that mix. Define which channels need isolation, their common-reference strategy, and the expected surge and ground-potential conditions.

Will COM-port numbering stay the same after an OS or BIOS update?

Stable numbering requires a controlled board revision, BIOS, driver package, and OS image. Revalidate enumeration before releasing any software or firmware change.

What information is needed to confirm the six-port configuration?

Provide the device and signal standard for each channel, connector and pinout, isolation, termination, cable length, baud rate, OS, enclosure, quantity, and production schedule.
